Medcalf, Theodore L. "Ted" - Hempen Funeral Home - Albers, Aviston, Breese, New Baden, IL - 618-588-3533// Theodore L. "Ted" Medcalf, 89, of New Baden, died Monday, September 19, 2011 at his home. He was born August 7, 1922 in Dale, IN, son of William Sankey and Cora (Lane) Medcalf. He married Thelma Woods on March 22, 1942 in Lincoln City, IN and she survives in New Baden. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Phyllis (Larry) Satterfield of New Baden; two grandchildren, Jami Mariah (Jeff) Brokering of O’Fallon and Jason Todd (Casey) Satterfield of Belleville; three great-grandchildren, Reid Carter Brokering, Emmy Paige Brokering and Cecelia Faye Satterfield; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ted and Sue Bracken of Tulsa, OK and Vic and Florence Smith of Boonville, IN. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Horace Medcalf, Russell Medcalf, Clarence Medcalf and James Medcalf, and a sister, Irene Harvey. Mr. Medcalf was a veteran of the Army Air Corps serving during WWII from 1941 to 1945. Following his military service he was postmaster at the New Baden post office for 26 years. He was a Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years and was faithful to the First United Methodist Church in Trenton. He was a charter member of the New Baden Lions Club and past Illinois Lions District Governor. He was active in the Lions of Illinois Foundation for many years and recently received a lifetime service award. Ted also supported the Lions of Illinois Eye Bank and was a donor. He was a member of the American Legion Post 321, the New Baden Chamber of Commerce, and was a retired fireman for the New Baden Volunteer Fire Department. He was one of the founders of the New Baden subdivision, a former New Baden park board member, and served on the New Baden planning committee. He was also a former New Baden School Board and Wesclin School Board member. He traveled in all 50 states, enjoyed Florida vacations and walks on the Ft. De Soto beach. He enjoyed playing golf and worked as a ranger at Governor’s Run Golf course. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Trenton with Rev. Mike Rucker officiating. Burial at Old Pigeon Cemetery in Lincoln City, IN will follow at 3:30 p.m. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Hempen Funeral Home in New Baden and from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Trenton. The American Legion will visit at 7 p.m., the Volunteer Fire Department at 7:15 and the Lions Club at 7:30 Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Trenton First United Methodist Church, the New Baden Lions Club, Old Pigeon Cemetery or to the New Baden Park and will be received at the funeral home.
