DeEtta F. Berndsen, 85, of Breese, died Monday, November 18, 2013 at Caring First Nursing Home in Breese. She was born May 26, 1928 in Carlyle, daughter of Chris and Charity (Hart) Steinmann. She married William J. “Bill” Berndsen on November 30, 1957 in Breese and he preceded her in death on May 14, 2010. She is survived by her children, Mark (Barb) Berndsen of Breese and Michelle (Robert) Brandkamp of Spokane, WA; four grandchildren, Phillip and Drew Berndsen and Alicia and Jenna Brandkamp. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a grandson, Nicholas Berndsen; two brothers, Irvin “Giz” Steinmann and David Steinmann; and a sister, Betty Kunkel. Mrs. Berndsen was a homemaker and a cosmetologist. She was a member of St. Dominic Parish in Breese and the American Legion Post 252 Auxiliary. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese with Rev. Patrick Peter officiating. Burial will follow at St. Dominic/St. Augustine Cemetery in Breese. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, November 22, 2013 and from 8 a.m. 9:30 a.m. Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Hempen Funeral Home in Breese. The American Legion Auxiliary will visit the funeral home at 7 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 252 Auxiliary or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be received at the funeral home.
