Betty J. (Rehkemper) Richter, 82, of Aviston, passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2018 at The Villas of St. James in Breese. Betty was born November 14, 1935 in St. Rose, IL, the daughter of August and Bernetta (nee, Ketterer) Rehkemper. She married Cornelius “Dick” Richter on May 21, 1957 in St. Rose and he passed away on January 28, 2012.
Surviving are her six children, Deb (Tim) Shasserre of Swansea, Allen (Barb) Richter of Aviston, Joyce (Jeff) Burns of Belmont, NC, Sheila (Mark) Collom of Galesville, WI, Susan (Dan) Kistner of Bloomington, IL, and Neal (Sandy) Richter of Aviston; grandchildren, Adam and Ryan Henrichs, Sarah (Dan) Einhorn, Jason (Nicole) Richter, David (Kate) Richter, Jennifer Richter, Christopher Richter, Jeff and Thomas Burns, Matt (fiance Blair) Collom, Lucas (fiance Karlee) Collom, Emily Collom, Megan (Zack) Hereford, Alex Bridges, and Miranda, Madison and Garrett Richter; 6 great grandchildren, Claire, John, Maria, and Lucia Richter; Nolan Einhorn, and Bridgette Richter; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Darlene (Art) Timmermann, Monica Rehkemper, Don Huelsman, Jim & Dolores Richter, Don & Ruth Richter, Margie Richter, Joanne & Jerome Rehkemper, and Delores “Babe” & John Cotton.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Rich and Dave Rehkemper; a sister Janet Huelsman; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Stanley “Butch” and Pauline Richter, Tom Richter, and Clarence Schrage.
Betty worked at Aviston Lumber Company for over 45 years until leaving work because of health issues in 2017. She was also Aviston Village Clerk for 20 years. Betty was a 50 year member of the Aviston American Legion Auxiliary and past President, an active member of St. Francis Parish, the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary, and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed reading, quilting, traveling and spending time with family and friends. She had a kind heart and was a friend to many. We would like to thank everyone for their assistance, prayers, and concerns during her illness.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 6, 2018 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Rev. Daniel Friedman officiating. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 5, 2018 from 4 pm until 8 pm and again on Thursday, September 6, 2018 from 8 am until 9:30 am at Nordike Funeral Home in Aviston. There will be a prayer service at 4 pm and the American Legion Auxiliary will have a prayer at 7 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to St. Francis Parish or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be received at the funeral home.
