Carol L. Mattern, 78, of Carlyle, formerly of Lively Grove, passed away on Friday, February 19, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese. She was born November 5, 1937 in Breese, daughter of Clarence “Buck” and Ruth (Lytle) Gross. She married Gene J. Mattern March 3, 1981 in
Belleville and he survives in Carlyle.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two sons, Michael J. (Nancy) Kreke of Breese and Terry V. (Kathy) Kreke of Carlyle; step-children, Debbie (Randy) Restoff of Columbia, Mark (Lisa) Mattern of Albers, Dan (Anna) Mattern of Belleville, and Carol (Greg) Sweet of Vennedy; eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a brother, Dennis Gross of California; and a sister, Kay (Phonse) Winkeler of Albers.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Kreke; and a sister-in-law, Laris Gross.
Mrs. Mattern was a customer service rep for Right Choice Services in Mascoutah. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Carlyle.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at St. George Catholic Church in New Baden with Rev. George Mauck officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in New Baden.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, February 22, 2016 and from 8 until 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Nordike Funeral Home in New Baden.
Memorials may be made to Family Hospice and will be received at the funeral home.
