Cyril J. “Tuffy” Markus, age 90, of Breese, died Monday, January 4, 2016 at Eden Village Retirement Community in Glen Carbon, IL. He was born March 6, 1925 in Aviston, son of John Henry and Catherine Ann (Wehlage) Markus. He married Edna Fuhler on April 19, 1949 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston and she survives at Eden Retirement Community in Glen Carbon, IL.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Paul (Sharon) Markus of Loveland, CO, Diane (the late Allen) Warnecke of Breese, IL, Dan (Betty) Markus of Pacific, MO, John (Kathy) Markus of Mt. Vernon, IL, and Cathy (special friend, Larry Werner) Huelsman of Highland, IL; six grandchildren, Sean Markus, Jessica Sellers, Nicholas Markus, Sarah Timmerman, Jenny Santel, and Kelsey Broadway; nine great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Dolores Markus of Waterloo, IL, Bernice “Becy” Foppe of Breese, IL, Rita Markus of Royal Oak, MI, Don (Jane) Fuhler of New Baden, IL, JoAnn Fuhler of Highland, IL, and Elmer “Buddy” Perkes of Breese, IL.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two sisters, Rosina Anna Markus and Marcella Richter; four brothers, Hubert and Rose Markus, Camillus Markus, Gregory and Mary Markus, and Alfred Markus; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Paul Richter, Ralph Fuhler, Viola “Ole” & August “Gus” Wellen, Marie & Clarence Albers, Cyril and Thelma “Timmy” Athmer, Jeannette Perkes, Ray Foppe, and Ray and Irene Buscher; his mother-in-law and father-in-law: Bertha and Herman Fuhler.
Mr. Markus was a farmer. Tuffy worked at Wickes Lumber in Breese for 26 years before retiring in 1990.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Nordike Funeral Home in Aviston with Deacon Rich Bagby officiating. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of service at Nordike Funeral Home in Aviston.
In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and will be received at the funeral home.
