Dorothy Helen Behrman, 92, of Albers, died Monday, January 9, 2023 at her home. She was born April 8, 1930 at the family farm in Damiansville, the daughter of Edward and Clara, nee Kniepmann, Billhartz. She married Urban A. “Shorty” Behrman on November 16, 1949 in Damiansville and shared 66 years together prior to his death on February 10, 2016.
Together they raised eight children, Gary Behrman of St. Louis, MO, Barb (Tom) Brandmeyer of Aviston, Glen “Shorty” (Theresa) Behrman and Clyde “Balls” (Peggy) Behrman all of Albers, Cindy (Mike) Korte of Germantown, Brenda Isert of St. Peters, MO, Kevin (Vicky) Behrman of St. Louis, MO, and Kris (Rick) Crane of NC. Dorothy and Shorty’s legacy continues through their 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren of whom her grandson, Justin Brandmeyer, and great-grandson, Grayson Timmermann, predeceased her. Dorothy is also survived by a sister, Evelyn Strieker; a brother, Louis (Ruth) Billhartz; sisters-in-law, Rita Billhartz and Phyllis Billhartz; and brothers-in-law, Louis Usselmann and David Demarias.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Marilyn Usselmann, Carol Demarias, and Delores Billhartz in infancy; brothers, Edward Billhartz, Jr., Jim Billhartz, Maurice Billhartz, and Leroy “LeeBee” Billhartz; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Anton & Catherine (Dingwerth) Behrman; and sisters-in-law & brothers-in-law, Bernadine & Bernard Frankovich, Eleanor & Del Huegen, Lou Billhartz, and Elmer Strieker.
Dorothy was a woman of immense faith; devout to her daily rosary. Sewing, baking, playing cards, and bingo brought her joy throughout life. She was her happiest when her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were around her table enjoying her delicious meals and playing euchre.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 16, 2023 at St. Bernard Church in Albers with Rev. Steven Beatty officiating. A reception will be held at the Albers American Legion following the services. Dorothy’s burial services will be held privately.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 15, 2023 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again on Monday, January 16, 2023 from 12 p.m. until time of services at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Albers.
Memorials may be made in Dorothy’s honor to St Bernard Parish, Mater Dei Catholic High School, or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be received at the church or Nordike Funeral Home, 15 E. Hanover St., New Baden, IL 62265 who is serving the family.
