Elmer J. Melton, Sr., age 88, of Carlyle passed away at his residence on Wednesday, December 7, 2016. Elmer was born in St. Louis, Missouri on July 19, 1928 the son of George Sr. and Gladys (Howard) Melton. He married Nadine Kinney on February 23, 1946 in Carlyle and she preceded him in death on July 11, 2009.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters: Doris Legate and Mary Hitpas; his son, Dennis Melton; his sons-in-law, Walter A. Koehler, Joseph Koch, James Legate, and Tim Hitpas; his grandsons: Joshua Melton and Jeremy Melton, Terry Marshal; his granddaughter, Chelsea Melton; and four brothers: Melvin, Eugene, Allen, and Richard Melton.
Mr. Melton is survived by his six daughters: Sharon Rule of Carlyle, Linda Koch of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Debbie Hunt and husband Ron of Carlyle, Becky Peters and husband Dale of Germantown, Janice Raudenbush and husband Steve of Carlyle and Lisa Rodenberg and husband Richard of Tilden; three sons: Elmer Melton Jr. of Carlyle, Ralph Melton and wife Debbie of Carlyle and Mike Melton of Carlyle; a sister, Carol Heuser of Collinsville; his brother, George Melton of St. Jacob; 33 grandchildren; 61 great grandchildren; and 11 great-great grandchildren.
Mr. Melton worked for Ice and Coal Company for 23 years, then for Philip Golder for almost two years and finally retired from Rakers Elevator after 13 ½ years. After retirement Elmer enjoyed working in his yard and garden as well as fishing and hunting. He never missed an opportunity to be with his family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Sunday, December 11, 2016 at Nordike Funeral Home in Carlyle with Deacon Pete Cerneka officiating. Burial will follow at Carlyle Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Saturday, December 10, 2016 from 4:00 until 8:00 pm and from 8:00 until 10:00 am on Sunday at Nordike Funeral Home in Carlyle.
Memorials are suggested to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and will be received at Nordike Funeral Home in Carlyle.
