David W. Gabler, 82, of New Baden, died Friday, February 1, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese. He was born August 15, 1925 in Stony Hill, MO, son of Michael and Dewia (Hill) Gabler. He married Luella Santel on June 28, 1949 at St. George Church in New Baden and she survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Scott Gabler of New Baden; two sisters-in-law, Rose Santel and Florence Santel both of New Baden and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Oliver Gabler; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Philip and Minnie Santel; and brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Delmond and Virginia Santel, James Santel and Leroy Santel. Mr. Gabler was a retired base procurement officer at Scott Air Force Base. He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force, a member of St. George Parish in New Baden and a charter member of the American Legion Post 321 in New Baden. A funeral mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2008 at St. George Catholic Church in New Baden with Msgr. James Blazine officiating. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in New Baden. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, February 3, 2008 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2008 at Hempen Funeral Home in New Baden. There will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. and the American Legion will visit at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice and will be received at the funeral home.
