Verla Mae Heinzmann, 84, of New Baden, died Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Countryside Manor in Aviston. She was born November 12, 1927 in Trenton, daughter of Walter Fred and Susan (McQuade) Steffen. She married Harold C. “Joe” Heinzmann on August 27, 1952 at St. George Catholic Church in New Baden and he survives in New Baden. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Jim (Brenda) Heinzmann of Steelville, Joe Heinzmann of Breese, Gerry Heinzmann of New Baden and Mary Jane (Leo) Wagner of Tuscaloosa, AL; seven grandchildren, Craig (special friend, Amanda) Heinzmann, Adam Heinzmann, Whitney Heinzmann, Dana (special friend, Matt) Heinzmann, Jason Heinzmann, Michael Wagner and Rachel Wagner; a great-grandchild, Brady Wilson; sister-in-law, Norma Heinzmann of Aviston; former daughter-in-law, Martha Heinzmann of New Baden; and two nieces, Pat (Dave) Nannemann and Mary (Jim) Padgett. She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, Matthew Allen Heinzmann; daughter-in-law, Margie Heinzmann; a brother, Leighton “Bud” Steffen; a sister, Lorene Friederich; brothers- in-law and sisters- in-law, Elsie Steffen, Herb Friederich, Herbert A. Heinzmann, Martha and Lester Ruff, Arnold and Anna Heinzmann, Raymond and Marcella Heinzmann, and infants, Herman Heinzmann and Louisa Heinzmann. Mrs. Heinzmann was a bookkeeper for Hemann Chevrolet in New Baden for 38 years. She was a member of St. George Parish and Altar Sodality in New Baden. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at St. George Catholic Church in New Baden with Rev. Eugene Neff officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in New Baden. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2012 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Hempen Funeral Home in New Baden. There will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. and the American Legion will visit at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Matthew Heinzmann Scholarship Fund at Mater Dei High School, Clinton County Relay For Life, TIP Hospice or St. George Parish Cemetery and will be received at the funeral home.
