Herbert G. "Sunshine" Hertenstein, 79, of New Baden, died Friday, December 9, 2011 at his home. He was born December 21, 1931 in New Baden son of Roland O. and Pearl (Schumacher) Hertenstein. He married Florence Kane on September 28, 1963 in Springfield, IL and she survives in New Baden. In addition to his wife, he is survived three daughters, Beth Mueth of Breese, Patty (Steve) Scardino of Apex, N.C., and Mary (Bill) Webb of New Baden; eight grandchildren; Christine Scardino, Tim Scardino, Dianne Scardino, Austin Mueth, Nolan Mueth, Meghan Webb, Kortney Webb, and Will Webb; a sister, Doris (John) Feret of Hickory Hills, IL; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charlene Joost of Steelville, IL, Jack Kane of Kansas City, MO, Kathleen Martin of Springfield, IL, George and Mary Kane of Katy, TX, and Jane Kane of Millstadt, IL. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Lillian Hertenstein; two brothers, Melvin Hertenstein and Carroll Joost; a sister, Lucille Swartzell; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Marie Hertenstein, Herb Swartzell, Maxine Comer, Jenny Kane, Bill Martin, and Jim Kane; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Russell and Lorine Kane. Mr. Hertenstein was a retired auditor for the Department of Defense and the SIU (Springfield, IL) School of Medicine. He graduated from New Baden High School class of 1948 and from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a bachelor’s degree in science and a master’s degree in science. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of St. George Parish in New Baden, and the American Legion Post 321 in New Baden where he was past commander and long time finance officer. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at St. George Catholic Church in New Baden with Rev. Gene Neff officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at New Baden City Cemetery in New Baden. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2011 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Hempen Funeral Home in New Baden. The American Legion will visit the funeral home at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the St. George Parish Cemetery Fund and will be received at the funeral home.
