Louise Mae Hopkins, 92, of New Baden, died Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Breese Caring First in Breese. She was born October 24, 1920 in Montclair, NJ, daughter of William Joseph and Lelia Emma (Miller) Hanley. She married Joseph Hopkins January 30, 1948 in Hammond Sport, NY and he preceded her in death April 30, 1995. She is survived by two daughters, Joanne (Elmer) Olson of Antioch, IL, and Gladys Wooley of Keysport; three grandchildren, Carla (Robert) Short, Joe (special friend, Amy) Hopkins, and Jo Ellen (John) Nickel; four great-grandchildren, Robert Short, Michael Short, Mya Sudmeier, and Katlyn Nickel; a sister, Nancy Jackson of Fairhope, AL; and a brother-in-law, Gordon Liska of Veronia, NJ. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Liska and a brother, William Hanley. Mrs. Hopkins was a homemaker and a telephone operator at Scott Air Force Base for 12 ½ years. She was a member of St. George Parish and Altar Sodality, New Baden American Legion Post 321 Auxiliary and the Ladies of the Moose #1563 in Cahokia. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at St. George Catholic Church in New Baden with Rev. Gene Neff officiating. Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013 and from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Hempen Funeral Home in New Baden. The American Legion Auxiliary will visit the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the American Heart Association and will be received at the funeral home.
