Monica M. "Sister Karen Rose" Huelsmann, 73, of St. Louis, MO, formerly of Aviston, IL died Sunday, June 18, 2006 at St. Joseph Hospital in Highland. She was born December 9, 1932 in Breese, daughter of Otto H. and Kate (Korte) Huelsmann. She is survived by two brothers, Donald Huelsmann and wife Janet of Highland, and Thomas C. Huelsmann and wife Betty of Aviston; two sisters, Dolores Weis and husband Cyril of Pocahontas and Mary Jane Middeke and husband Sy of Altamont Springs, FL; and nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Huelsmann who died in infancy, a nephew Bryan Huelsmann and a niece, Julie Heimann. She was a member of St. Paul Parish in Highland, IL, St. Louis Cursillio Movement and the Dominican Laity. She was a School Sister of Notre Dame from 1949 until 1969 and taught as an elementary school teacher. After leaving the School Sisters of Notre Dame she became a lay teacher at St. Luke’s Elementary School, St. Cecilia and St. Ann Elementary School in St. Louis, Mo. From 1980 until 2002 she worked as an offset press operator for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, MO. She was also a volunteer for the Criminal Justice Ministries of St. Louis from 1980 until 2002. A funeral mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2006 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Rev. John Vogler officiating. Interment will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2006 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2006 at Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to School Sisters of Notre Dame, Cursillio Movement or to Criminal Justice Ministry of St. Louis and will be received at the funeral home.
