John Albert Hund, 91, of New Baden, Illinois, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Clinton Manor Nursing Home in New Baden. He was born on January 15, 1934, in O’Fallon, Illinois, to Edwin and Frances (Moll) Hund. John married the love of his life, Mary B. Hefner, on May 30, 1962, at Holy Childhood Church in Mascoutah. Mary preceded him in death on September 17, 2015.
John is remembered fondly by his children: Steve (Jacquie) Hund of Irvington, Alan (Veronica) Hund, Tater (Norma) Hund, and Susie (Tim) Hintz, all of New Baden, as well as Dan (Gretchen) Hund of Highland. He cherished his role as a grandfather to 15 grandchildren, Zach (Kayla) Hund, Jessie Hund, Josh (Lori Johnston) Hund, Dylan (Maddie) Hund, Rhys Hund, Melanie (Adam) Haas, Bryn Hund, Carys (Austin) Gubbels, Ffyon Hund, Trent Hund, John Hund, Calvin Hintz, Jay Strider, Valerie Hund, and Lucas Hund. John also took great joy in being a great-grandfather to 16 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Lonnie Hefner of Mascoutah, and sister-in-law, Hady (Larry) Hund of Magnolia, Texas, and Mary H. Hund of Mascoutah and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Olis and Mary Ann Hefner, and his siblings Paul (Betty) Hund, Jim Hund, Gene Hund and brother in-law Robert Hefner.
For many years, John and Mary operated the New Baden IGA, which is now the New Baden Market Center. The store has been a cherished institution in the community since 1967. John was an active St. George Parish member, a charter member of the New Baden Jaycees, and involved with the New Baden Chamber of Commerce. His dedication to his community and commitment to giving back were hallmarks of his life.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12:30 PM on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at St. George Catholic Church in New Baden, followed by burial at Resurrection Cemetery in New Baden.
Visitation will be held at Nordike Funeral Home in New Baden on Saturday, March 15, 2025, from 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM.
Memorials may be made to Clinton Manor Nursing Home or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be received at Nordike Funeral Home, 15 East Hanover Street, New Baden, IL 62265.
Following the committal service, there will be a celebration of John's life at the New Baden American Legion.
