Joseph “Joe” A. Strieker, age 66, of Collinsville, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, February 17, 2022 at his home. He was born on March 4, 1955 in Breese, the son of Anthony J. and Mary Ann, nee Thole, Strieker. He married Trudy Varel April 7, 1984 at St. Rose Catholic Church in St. Rose and she survives.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his mother, Mary Ann Strieker of Aviston; his siblings, Philip Strieker of Aviston, Clifford (Marlene) Strieker of Jackson, MO, Barbara (Bryan) DeNeve of Paducah, KY, Betty Strieker of St. Peters, MO, Roger (Lisa) Strieker of Aviston, and Cindy (Mark) Rabideau of Auburn, IL; nephews and nieces, Paul, Daniel, John, Mark, David, Lindsay, Mackenzie, Madi, Brenden, Ashley, Tyler, Cooper, and Sydney; great-nieces & great-nephews, Hadley, Elliott, Ainlee, Kinsley, and Ruby; he is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John & Angie Varel of Wailuku, HI, Allan & Geri Varel of Damiansville, Joe & Sharon Varel of Troy, Ken & Inger Varel of Columbia, and Dianne & Mark Voss of Highland; nieces and nephews, Jesse, Kyle, Keith, Michael, Brandon, Nathanial, Lauren, Hannah, Erika, Nicole, and Matthew; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Iris, Violet, Cade, Cammi, Alex, Grayson, Nya, Hattie, Angelina, Waverly, and Amos.
In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his brother, Brian Strieker; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John H. and Leora Varel.
Mr. Strieker was a member of St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville. Joe was an insurance agent and worked in the banking industry. He was an IHSA certified official for over 47 years and received the 2020 Official of the Year award. Joe was a long time IL American Legion Umpire, Mon-clair League Umpire, and was also in the Clinton County Baseball Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Midwest Umpire Association, the Southwestern Athletic Officials Association and the Southern Illinois Basketball Officials Association. Joe was an avid supporter of the Relay for Life and Stridin’ & Survivin’. He cherished his time spent with his family, especially his nieces and nephews, and he loved attending their sporting events. Joe enjoyed his travels with Trudy but he especially enjoyed the time he spent with his brother, Brian, visiting baseball stadiums.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, February 21, 2022 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Fr. Daniel Friedman officiating. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 until 6:00 pm on Sunday, February 20, 2022 and on Monday, February 21, 2022 from 9:00 until 9:45 a.m. at Nordike Funeral Home in Aviston.
In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials made in memory of Joe are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in memory of his brother, Brian or to Joe’s wishes to support the healthcare individuals who provided compassionate care to him throughout his cancer journey (checks made payable to Trudy Strieker) and will be received at Nordike Funeral Home, 301 S.
