Joyce Annette Michael, age 81, of Hoffman, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at Carlyle Healthcare Center. She was born April 29, 1937 in Wilkin County, MN, the daughter of Charles and Augusta, nee Stuehrenberg, Poppel. She married Roy Michael on June 11, 1960 at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Wolverton, MN and he preceded her in death on March 9, 2016.
Joyce is survived by her children, Michele Hill and husband Dale of Hoffman, and James Michael and wife Connie of Centralia; three grandchildren, Megan Michael, Zachary Michael, and Orion Hill; two sisters, Margaret Barringer and husband Lyle of MN, and Della Albert and husband Carlton of KS; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Maryann & Bill Luetner, Wayne & Nancy Michael, Shelia & Mike Holston, and Ruth Ann Poppel; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and loving caretakers at Carlyle Healthcare Center.
In addition to her parents and husband, Joyce was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Theodore and Olinda, nee Reinkensmeyer Michael; a brother, Lawrence Poppel; and brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert Michael, and Harlen & Wilma Lange.
Joyce moved to Hoffman in 1959 to teach at Trinity Lutheran School and later retired from the Centralia City Schools. She later worked as church secretary at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoffman. Joyce was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she served on various committees and was active in the LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League). Joyce loved her church family and going to bible studies, but most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 6, 2018 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of services at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoffman.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoffman with Pastor Stephen Krenz officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
Memorials in honor of Joyce are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, Southern Illinois LWML Student Assistance Fund or to the charity of donor’s choice and will be received at church or at Nordike Funeral Home in Carlyle.
