Juliana T. “Julie” Toennies, 84, of New Baden, died Monday, August 23, 2021 at Memorial Hospital in Shiloh. She was born June 2, 1937 in Breese, the daughter of Bernard and Gertrude, nee Hellmann, Rakers, Sr. She married Walter H. “Walt” Toennies on September 23, 1958 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston and he preceded her in death on November 28, 2013.
Julie is survived by her children, Terry (Bonnie) Toennies and Ken (Gloria) Toennies all of Trenton, Stanley (fiancée, Patricia Eldridge) Toennies of Venedy, Allen (Candi) Toennies of Damiansville, and Jim “Jock” (Kara) Toennies of Albers; eight grandchildren, Nicole (Matt) Hellmann, Megan Toennies, Lance (Sarah) Toennies, Larissa (Mark) Chapman, Lacy (special friend, Jason Jansen) Toennies, Brittany (fiancé, Jacob Theising) Toennies, Jenna Toennies, and Kate Toennies; great-grandchildren, Owen & Harris Hellmann, Brooks, Mara, Malia, & McKenna Chapman, Emelyn & Winston Toennies, and Sage Toennies; a brother, Jim (Marilyn) Rakers of Aviston; a sister, Johanna Heimann of St. Louis, MO; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rita Toennies of Damiansville, Marie & Greg Niemeyer of Breese, Bernice “Bim” & Franklin Fuehne of Damiansville, Jerry & Sharon Toennies of Waterloo, Jan & Tom Eversgerd of Germantown, Germaine & Herb Schulte of Trenton, Bernette Toennies of Germantown, and Jane Toennies of Breese.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Toennies; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Margaret, nee Santel, Toennies; her siblings and their spouses, Ben & Clara Rakers, Tony & Leona Rakers, Annie & Vincent Kalmer, Al & Rita Rakers, Charles & Dolores Rakers, Mary “Sally” & Robert Haselhorst, Rita & Vic Kalmer, and Delores & Vince Langenhorst; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Alvin Toennies, Henry & Lucille Albers, David Heimann, Cletus Toennies, Joe Toennies, Norman Toennies, Emma Toennies.
Mrs. Toennies was a dedicated employee of Aviston Lumber for over 40 years. She was a member of St. George Parish in New Baden. Julie was an avid Bartelso Baseball fan and enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals. She enjoyed quilting, cooking, canning, and especially loved spending time with her family.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 27, 2021 at St. George Catholic Church in New Baden with Msgr. David Darin officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in New Baden.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2021 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Friday, August 27, 2021 at Nordike Funeral Home in New Baden.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made for family wishes and will be received at the funeral home.
