Larry D. Mathews, 84, formerly of New Baden, IL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at The Villas of Holly Brook in Effingham, IL. He was born on July 18, 1940, in Mattoon, IL, the son of Paul D. and Virginia M. Mathews (nee Sanders), who predeceased him.
Larry had a distinguished career as Vice President for the Sweets Division of McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, contributing over 30 years of dedicated service in several major cities, including St. Louis, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York City. His expertise and leadership left an indelible mark on the publishing industry, and his professional legacy continues to inspire many.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Larry also served honorably as a Sergeant in the Indiana Air National Guard during the Vietnam War. His dedication to his country reflected his strong principles and commitment to service, values he carried into every aspect of his life.
Larry was a man of many interests and passions. He loved to travel, seeking adventure and new experiences that broadened his horizons. He found joy in reading, relishing the opportunity to delve into different worlds through literature. He was also an avid competitive ping pong player, where his skill and enthusiasm brought both joy and camaraderie to those around him.
Larry leaves behind his devoted wife, Mary Sue Mathews (nee Moore), whom he married May 17, 1968 in Belleville, IL; and his cherished children, R. Douglas and Natalie Mathews of Rome, GA, Lisa and Don Harris of Flora, IL, and Scott Anthony and Jan Mathews who reside in Ecuador. He was a proud grandfather and great grand children who he loved dearly. Larry is also survived by his brother, Jimmie K. Mathews and family providing a lasting bond of family that reflects his commitment to those he loved.
Larry D. Mathews will be remembered not only for his remarkable professional contributions but also for his kindness, laughter, and unwavering support to his family and friends. His legacy of love and dedication will continue to resonate within the hearts of all who knew him.
