Andrew F. “Bud” Markus, 93, of Aviston, died Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Countryside Manor in Aviston. He was born October 3, 1920 in Aviston, son of Benedict J. and Sophia (Hilmes) Markus. He married Bernadine Isert on January 12, 1946 in Highland and she survives in Aviston. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, Stanley (Ruth-Ann) Markus of Damiansville, Charlotte (Larry) Bair, Marilyn (Bill) Alexander, and Steven (Michelle Rainwater) Markus all of Aviston, Keith Markus of O’Fallon, Carl (Lisa) Markus of Aviston, Cheryl (John) Nicolard of Woodland Hills, CA, Donna (Allen) Albers of Germantown, and Jane Gerner of St. Louis, MO; 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 2 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Louis “Bozo” Markus, Lawrence “Snick” Markus, Robert “Perp” Markus, and Benedict Markus Jr. in infancy; three sisters, Anna “Renee” Raterman, Frances Diemeke, and Helen Huber; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marie Markus, Otto Raterman, Ollie Diemeke, Ray Huber, Veronica Markus, and Dorothy Markus. Mr. Markus was an original owner of Markus Cabinet in Aviston from 1946 until his retirement in 1986. Bud was a member of St. Francis Parish, the American Legion Post 1239, and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, cards, hunting, woodworking, wine making, and spending time at his clubhouse. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 28, 2014 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Rev. Dan Friedman officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2014 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2014 at Hempen-Nordike Funeral Home in Aviston. The American Legion will visit the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 1239 or to St. Francis Parish and will be received at the funeral home.
