Bernadine P. Markus, 91, of Aviston, died Friday, November 21, 2014 at her home in Aviston. She was born August 20, 1923 in Highland, daughter of F. Joseph and Martina (Weidner) Isert. She married Andrew F. “Bud” Markus on January 12, 1946 in Highland and he preceded her in death on July 24, 2014. She is survived by her children, Stanley (Ruth-Ann) Markus of Damiansville, Charlotte (Larry) Bair, Marilyn (Bill) Alexander, and Steven (Michelle Rainwater) Markus all of Aviston, Keith Markus of O’Fallon, Carl (Lisa) Markus of Aviston, Cheryl (John) Nicolard of Woodland Hills, CA, Madonna (Allen) Albers of Germantown, and Jane Gerner of St. Louis, MO; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Marie Isert and Florence Isert both of Highland. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 2 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Thompson; four brothers, Francis Isert, Richard Isert, Vincent Isert, and Thomas Isert; and brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Richard Thompson, Dorothy Isert, and Helen Isert. Mrs. Markus was a homemaker and seamstress. She was a member of St. Francis Parish and altar sodality, and the American Legion Post 1239 Auxiliary in Aviston. Bernadine enjoyed fishing, travelling especially to Alaska where she visited 13 times, quilting, cooking, and canning. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Rev. Dan Friedman officiating. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2014 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston. There will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 1239 Auxiliary or to St. Francis Parish Improvement Fund and will be received at the funeral home.
