Mark R. Markus, 63, of Aviston, died Friday, May 22, 2015 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO He was born December 24, 1951 in Breese, son of Lawrence and Verena (Wolters) Markus. He married Carol Spihlmann on July 27, 1973 at St. Boniface Church in Germantown and she survives in Aviston. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children: Jason Markus of Breese, Stacy Brewer and husband Scott of Lake Saint Louis, MO, Brett Markus and wife Sarah of Beckemeyer, and Phillip Markus and wife Danielle of Highland; seven grandchildren: Brandon, Zachary, Ariel, Jace, Kara, Mason, and Autumn; three brothers, Charles Markus, Lawrence Markus and wife Marcella, and Thomas Markus and wife Jessie, all of Aviston. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his infant son Nathan Markus; his infant sister: Mary Frances Markus; as well as three brothers: Daniel Markus, Gerald “Porky” Markus, and Benedict Markus. Mr. Markus graduated high school in 1970 and was immediately drafted into the United States Army where he served in the Vietnam War. He worked as log grader for Kuhl Lumber and Pallet Company for 15 years. Mark was a member of St. Francis Parish and a past member of the American Legion Post 1239. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Rev. Dan Friedman officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2015 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Hempen-Nordike Funeral Home in Aviston. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association and will be received at the funeral home.
