Mary Elizabeth (Adcock) Craig of Aviston, IL, passed away at Greenville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Greenville, IL, on October 28, 2024, after a brief stay. She was the daughter of David Dewitt and Mary (File) Adcock and was born on October 26, 1935, at the family’s home in Bond County, Illinois. Mary Elizabeth spent most of her youth in Greenville, attending Mulberry Grove and Greenville schools. She graduated from Greenville High School with the class of 1953. Mary Elizabeth married John Franklin Hockett, and they had three children. She later married Robert Ray Craig of Marshall, IL. Robert preceded her in death in 2008.
With an early interest in sewing, Mary Elizabeth’s first job was at the Model Glove Factory in Greenville. She also worked at local grocery stores, where she enjoyed assisting customers. Other employment was held at Carlisle Syntec and as a rural postal carrier. In addition to growing plants and flowers and completing her daily codeword, crossword, or Sudoku puzzles, sewing was a lifetime hobby. She made clothing for her children. In later years, she sewed craft items, including shopping bags and pillows, and made many quilts for family, friends, and the homeless. Woodworking in the shop with Robert was also a favorite pastime, with many family heirlooms built and furniture refurbished.
Surviving are her daughters, Patricia Ann (Sam) Kious of Greenville, IL, and Barbara Faye (Darrell) Strieker of Aviston, IL, and a son, John Michael Hockett of Greenville, IL. Stepsons: Michael Lee Craig, Randal Leon Craig, and Richard Brian Craig. Grandchildren: Scott (Genice) Miller, John Mathew Edwards, and Joshua Michael Hockett; and great-grandchildren: Cole Miller, Keenan Edwards, Izaac Edwards, and Adonai Edwards, along with several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister Oneta Hensley, Greenville, IL, and many nieces, nephews, and special friends.
Preceded in death by her parents, brothers James Martin Adcock and Gene Oliver (Geneva Mae) Adcock; sisters Doris Elaine Callahan and Clara Belle (Robert) Dale; half-brother Charles Compton; and a grandson, Jason Kious.
Mary Elizabeth was a thoughtful giver of gifts, talents, and time. Continuing in that spirit, she requested that her body be donated to science upon her death. In lieu of plants, flowers, or other memorial items, individuals are asked to share their gifts with someone in need, or memorials can be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
According to her wishes, a private graveside service will be held at a later date.
