Mary June Hammel of Carlyle died Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville at the age of 86. June was born in Hoffman on September 11, 1927 the daughter of Walter “Curly” and Elsie (Owens) Sprehe. She married Clarence “Buck” Hammel at the parsonage of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle on September 2, 1945, and he preceded her in death on December 1, 2002.
June is survived by her sister: Lois Sprehe of Carlyle; brothers: Walter “Sonny” Sprehe of Carlyle, Dean Sprehe and wife Ann of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Stanley Sprehe and wife Linda of Carlyle; nephews: Russ and Terri Sprehe of Morgantown, North Carolina and Eric and Tim Sprehe of Carlyle; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Charles and Lucy Mae Hammel of Carlyle; and special friends: Sharon Schneider and family and Jerry and Deann Carter and family. She was a wonderful aunt to many Hammel nieces and nephews.
June was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Lloyd and Anna Mae Hammel and Alvin and Virginia Goldsmith.
June was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church of Carlyle. She worked at the Will-Mary Shoppe in Carlyle for 48 years.
Funeral services for June will be Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle with Pastor Steven Sommerer officiating. The interment will follow in Carlyle Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle on Friday from 4 to 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 8:00 AM until the time of services.
