Norman “Ponch” Determan, 93, of New Baden, died Monday, December 5, 2022 at Trenton Village. He was born November 27, 1929 in St. Louis, MO, the son of Leo A. and Katherine, nee Toennies, Determan. He married Leona “Eb” Huelskoetter May 27, 1952 in New Baden and she preceded him in death on April 14, 2019.
Ponch is survived by his daughter, Nancy (Joseph) Wobbe; four grandchildren, Natalie (Mark) Haag, Dana (Kyle) Wiegmann, Nicole (Justin) Hodgson, and Laura (Stuart) Knuf; 12 great-grandchildren, Marlie, Max, Nora, & Henry Haag, Aislee, Barrett, & Aven Wiegmann, Gavin & Ryan Hodgson, and Parker, Hayden, & Sutton Knuf; a brother, James (Rita) Determan; a sister, Janet “Jennie” Morris; sister-in-law, LaVerne “Worney” Laux; and brother-in-law, Howard Boston.
In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his son, Roger Determan; three sisters, Helen K. “Honna” Determan, Alice Kiefer, and Lorene “Blondie” Albers; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Francis “Franco” Kiefer, Erwin “Tubby Albers, Melva “Fritty” Friederich, Delores “Mutz” & Bobby Edwards, Don Laux, and Darlene Boston.
Mr. Determan was appointed to the Illinois State Police as a Trooper in April 1957, and retired on December 31, 1985 after 29 years of service. He was a member of St. George Parish in New Baden. Ponch enjoyed walking around the neighborhood, golfing, playing cards, and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2022 at St. George Catholic Church in New Baden with Rev. Gene Neff officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in New Baden.
Visitation will be held Saturday, December 17, 2022 from 9 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at St. George Catholic Church in New Baden.
Memorials may be made to St. George Cemetery and will be received at church or Nordike Funeral Home, 15 E. Hanover St., New Baden, IL 62265 who is serving the family.
