Chief Norman A. Howell, CPD, Ret., 87, of Caruthersville, MO, died Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Countryside Manor in Aviston, IL. He was born October 31, 1928 in Steele, the son of George and Mollie (Bivens) Howell. He married Mary F. King on January 15, 1947 in Piggott, AR. and she survives in Caruthersville, MO.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, Larry A. (Lois) Howell of Hernando, FL, Danny W. (Melissa) Howell of Caruthersville, MO, and Janice L. (Billy) Batye of St. Charles, MO; 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Franklin D. & Doris King of Alamogordo, NM, Kenneth M. King of Harpers Ferry, WV, Billie O. King of Springfield, MO, and Marge King of Wood River, IL; nieces and nephews; and he is also survived by very special friends that have helped the family thru this difficult time, especially Charlie Jones, Paul & Sharon Russell, and Linda Bush Howren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson, Roger Bennett, Jr.; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Barbara King, Penny King, Martha A. & Herschel Brister, Ferd S. & Angie King, Jr., Eugene P. & Millie King, and Edward L. King.
Mr. Howell was a veteran of the United States Army National Guard having served from 1947-1968 then served as Police Chief for the Caruthersville Police Department from September 1977 - July 1996. He was a member of the Temple Baptist Church and the American Legion Post 88 in Caruthersville.
Funeral Services will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the Temple Baptist Church in Caruthersville, MO with Pastor Jim Pilcher officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Maple Cemetery in Caruthersville, MO.
Friends may call Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 9 a.m. until time of services at the Temple Baptist Church in Caruthersville, MO.
Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project and will be received at the church or Nordike Funeral Home, 15 E. Hanover, New Baden, IL 62265 who is serving the family.
