Thomas D. O’Brien, 66, of Aviston, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at his home. He was born July 23, 1944 in Carrollton, IL son of James E. and Mary R. (Smith) O’Brien. He married Mary R. Rakers on December 22, 1984 in Trenton and she survives in Aviston.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his father, James E. O’Brien of New Baden; his children, Tommy (Pam) O’Brien of Trenton, Mike (Rhonda) O’Brien of Aviston, Steve (friend, Paula) O’Brien of Breese, Scott (Sheila) Wieter of Aviston and John (JoLynn) Wieter of Aviston; 13 grandchildren, Emily O’Brien, Beth O’Brien, Kyle (Sarah) O’Brien, Nathan O’Brien, Megan O’Brien, Kobey O’Brien, Kaylee O’Brien, Maddy Wieter, Annie Wieter, Jake Wieter, Mason Wieter, Zac Wieter, and Joe Wieter; one great-grandchild, Harper O’Brien; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rollie Reichenbock of Fayetteville, Margie and Joe Heinzmann of Breese, Jerome and Edna Rakers of Aviston, Don and Ruth Mary Rakers of Aviston, Walter Rakers of Aviston, Howard and Mary Lou Rakers of Breese, and Tony and Mary Rakers, Jr. of Trenton. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother; and a sister, Rebecca Reichenbock.
Mr. O’Brien was a retired CSX railroad machinist. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of St. Francis Parish, the American Legion Post 1239 in Aviston and the International Association of Machinists, Railroad Division in Fairmont City, IL. Tom’s hobbies were collecting antiques and beer memorabilia, especially Falstaff beer collectables.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2011 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Rev. Dan Friedman officiating followed by full Military Honors.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2011 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2011 at Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston. There will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Chakota Therapeutic Riding Center and will be received at the funeral home.
