Anna V. “Renee” Raterman, 90, of Aviston, died Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Countryside Manor in Aviston. She was born October 24, 1922 in Aviston, daughter of Benedict and Sophia (Hilmes) Markus. She married Otto Raterman in Aviston on November 12, 1949 and he preceded her in death on June 6, 1978. She is survived by a daughter, Susan (Ron) Toennies of Aviston; a son, Terry (Amelia) Raterman of Webster Groves, MO; four grandchildren, Lisa (Jeff) Gross, Tara (Ron) Sample, Christopher (Sue Bray) Jansen, and Adam (Sarah Becker) Jansen; three step grandchildren, Mike, Emma, and Rhonda; seven great-grandchildren, Abby Gross, Katie Sample, Hunter Sample, Justin Sample, Trevor Jansen, Royce Foster-Becker, and Walker Jansen; five step great-grandchildren; and a brother, Andrew “Bud” (Bernadine) Markus of Aviston. In addition to her husband and her parents she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ronald Jansen; four brothers, Louis “Bozo” Markus, Lawrence F. “Snick” Markus, Robert “Perp” Markus, and Benedict Markus, Jr. in infancy; two sisters, Frances Deimeke and Helen Huber; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ollie Deimeke, Ray Huber, Marie Markus, Verena Markus, and Dorothy Markus. Mrs. Raterman formerly worked at the Aviston Shoe Factory, Lager’s General Store in Aviston and Gundy’s Gift Shop in Breese. She was a member of St. Francis Parish in Aviston and the American Legion Post 1239 Auxiliary in Aviston. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and reading. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at St. Francis temporary church in the gym with Rev. Dan Friedman officiating. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston. There will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. and the American Legion Auxiliary will visit the funeral at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Countryside Manor Activity Fund or St. Francis Improvement Fund and will be received at the funeral home.
