Robert E. Schaefer of Carlyle died surrounded by his family at the Countryside Manor Nursing Home in Aviston on Monday, October 7, 2013 at the age of 87 years. Bob was born in Carlyle on March 31, 1926, the son of Louis and Elizabeth (Nothaus) Schaefer. He married Colleen Vieregge on August 11, 1951 in Carlyle and she preceded him in death on May 5, 2013.
Mr. Schaefer is survived by his children: Charlie Schaefer and significant other Jennifer Whittaker of Carlyle Terri Belangee and husband Dennis of Florissant, Missouri; granddaughter: Shari Schaefer and fiancé George Proksha of Carlyle; sibling: James Schaefer of Matoon, Illinois, John Schaefer of Lexington, Kentucky, Grace Stoltz and husband Raymond of St. Louis, Missouri, and Shirley Bertin of St. Louis, Missouri; and his wonderful caregiver Janice Huelsmann of Carlyle.
Bob was a member of St. Mary Church in Carlyle. Bob served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Bob and Colleen worked on their family farm until 1961 when they opened Schaefer Sand Pit. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and antiquing and going to craft fairs.
Funeral services for Mr. Schaefer will be Friday, October 11, 2013 at 12 noon at the Frerker Funeral Home in Carlyle with Fr. George Mauck officiating. The interment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family at the Frerker Funeral Home on Friday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of services.
The those wishing to honor Mr. Schaefer with a memorial, the family suggests memorials to the Countryside Manor Nursing Home in Aviston and those will be received at the Frerker Funeral Home which is serving the family.
