Robert H. Wiegmann, 89, of New Baden, died Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Aviston Countryside Manor. He was born April 2, 1927 in Lookingglass Twp., son of Bernard H. “Ben” and Margaret (Kalmer) Wiegmann. He married Joan M. Rensing on September 14, 1960 in New Baden and she survives in New Baden.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Mark (Cindy) Wiegmann of Albers, Carl (Jackie) Wiegmann of New Baden, Robert (Teresa) Wiegmann, Jr. of Damiansville, Karen (Kevin) Sudholt of Albers, and Denise (Otis) Jones of Aurora, CO; 12 grandchildren, Hunter Wiegmann, Travis Wiegmann, Kelsey (Aaron) Linnenmann, Andrew Sudholt, Robert H. Wiegmann III, Trey (Kelly) Wiegmann, Chad Wiegmann, Jordan Wiegmann, Nicole (Micah) Rincker, Logan Geppert, Brittany Jones, Natasha Jones, and Otis Jones; three great-grandchildren, Reed Rincker, Easton Wiegmann, and Zoey Wiegmann; a son-in-law, Robert Geppert of Nashville; a brother, Bernard “Ben” (Helen) Wiegmann of Ottawa; a sister, Irene Thole of Aviston; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, William Schrage of Greenville, Ralph & Genevieve “Jenny” Rensing of Alhambra, Cecilia Wiegmann of St. Rose; Pat Wise of Breese, Marge Rensing of Nashville, Janet Rensing and Eileen Rensing both of New Baden, and Audrey Ostermeier of Georgetown, TX.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Marlene Geppert; sisters, Valeria Korte and Verena Schrage; brothers, Herbert Wiegmann, Edmund Wiegmann; his adopted brother, Tony Bauman; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Cornelius & Blanche Rensing, Herman Rensing, Jerome Rensing, Wilbert Korte, and Alvis “A.F.” Thole, Al Ostermeier, and Al & Marie Norbeck.

Mr. Wiegmann was an avid farmer and retired after 32 years working at Scott Air Force Base. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a Purple Heart recipient for having served in combat in the Korean War. He was a devoted member of St. George Parish in New Baden, the Albers American Legion Post 1026, Knights of Columbus in New Baden, Clinton County Farm Bureau, and a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 100 in Trenton.

Robert was a devoted husband, father, and grandpa. He was happiest when on the farm, spending time with his family, and tinkering in the wood shop. Robert loved animals and playing his harmonica.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at St. George Church in New Baden with Rev. Gene Neff officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in New Baden.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, October 3, 2016 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at Nordike Funeral Home in New Baden. The New Baden Knights of Columbus will have a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Alzheimer’s Association, or to the charity of the family’s wishes and will be received at the funeral home.
