Edwin Santel, 88, of Damiansville, died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at Caring First in Breese. He was born June 28, 1920 in Damiansville, son of George H. and Theresa (Middendorff) Santel. He married Rose Ann Johnson on August 10, 1943 in Albers and she survives in Damiansville. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Marilyn (Albert) Tebbe of St. Rose, Eileen (Bill) Kampwerth of St. Rose, and Steven (Rosie) Santel of Damiansville; six grandchildren, Angela (Brian) Winkeler, Neal (Fiancée, Sarah) Tebbe, Amanda (Scott) Schrage, Dana (Bryan) Marcoot, Dale Kampwerth and Mike (Karen) Kampwerth; two step-grandchildren, Dawn (Isi) Schomaker and Stacy (Thomas) Yehling; seven great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and one step great-great-grandchild; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, George and Virginia Johnson of Belleville, Anthony Johnson of Ocala, FL, Mary Ann Yungbluth of Jefferson City, MO, Adeline "Ada" and Harold Friederich of Mascoutah and Edward and Jeanette Johnson of New Baden. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sharon Rose Santel; brother, Bernard H. Santel; half brother, Joe Middendorff; two sisters, Dorothy Wesselmann and Vera Athmer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Cecelia Santel, Aloys Wesselmann, William Athmer, Martin B. "Hoot" and Lenora Johnson, Alois "Whiz" and Genevieve Johnson, Harry "Popeye" Johnson, Kay Johnson, Vincent "Sparky" and Margie Johnson, Dorothy and Edward Feldmann, John Yungbluth, and Bernard W. "Benny" and Audrey Johnson. Mr. Santel was a farmer. He also worked at Scott Air Force Base as a service technician at the base-exchange gas station. He was a member of St. Damian Parish and Holy Name Society in Damiansville and the Clinton County Farm Bureau. A funeral mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2008 at St. Damian Catholic Church in Damiansville with Msgr. Donald Eichenseer officiating. Interment will follow at St. Damian Cemetery in Damiansville. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2008 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Thursday, August 7, 2008 at Hempen Funeral Home in New Baden. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or St. Damian Parish and will be received at the funeral home.
