Florence S. Santel, 87, of New Baden, died Sunday, November 8, 2009 at Clinton Manor Living Center in New Baden. She was born March 13, 1922 in Bartelso, daughter of Clemens and Anna (Gausepohl) Foppe. She married James B. Santel on June 17, 1942 in Bartelso and he preceded her in death on July 10, 1972. Mrs. Santel is survived by one son, Russel (Ruth) Santel of New Baden; a daughter, June (Gary) Davis of Trenton; five grandchildren, Phillip (very special friend Cissy) Santel, Richard (Keri) Santel, Diane Santel, Steve (Alicia) Davis, and Jeff Davis; six great grandchildren, Kelli Santel, Ronny Santel, Samantha Santel, Russel Santel, Piper Santel, and Dalton Santel. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Santel; a daughter, Maryann Santel in infancy; five sisters, Josephine Palm, Alvina Becker, Christine Smith, Rose Spitz, and Laura Foppe; two brothers, Andrew Foppe and Cornelius Foppe; brothers in law and sisters in law, Al Palm, Joe Becker, Vivian Foppe, Clyde Smith, Ralph Spitz, Delmond and Virginia Santel, Leroy and Rose Santel, Luella and Dave Gabler. Mrs. Santel was a member of St. George Parish and Altar Sodality, the New Baden Senior Citizens, and the ILGWU (International Ladies Garment Workers Union). She worked at Princess Peggy and then Bridal Original in Belleville until her retirement. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at St. George Church in New Baden with Rev. Eugene Neff officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in New Baden. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 10, 2009 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Hempen Funeral Home in New Baden. There will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. and the Senior Citizens will visit at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Western Clinton County Senior Nutrition Center and will be received at the funeral home.
