Herman C. Schomaker, 88 of New Baden died Saturday, June 19, 2010 at St. Joseph Hospital in Breese. He was born May 15, 1922 in Belleville son of Herman J. and Mary (Overberg) Schomaker. He married Sophie V. Frerker on October 20, 1953 in New Baden and she survives in New Baden. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, Barbara (Thomas) Wolfslau, John (Nancy) Schomaker and Richard G. Schomaker all of New Baden, and Monica (Michael) Hellmann of Trenton; seven grandchildren, Jamie Wolfslau, Justin (Dana) Wolfslau, Christopher Schomaker, Sarah Schomaker, Brandon (Rebecca) Schomaker, Matthew (Nicole) Hellmann, Elizabeth (fiancé, Benjamin Crawford) Hellmann; two great-grandchildren, Jaden Wolfslau and Brooke Schomaker; one brother, David (Kay) Schomaker of New Baden; one sister, Marie Krausz of Mascoutah; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Schomaker of Albers; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Catherine Hellmann; a daughter-in-law, Shelly Mae Schomaker; brothers & sisters, Joseph H. Schomaker, Eleanor Kamer, Louise Buehler, Alice Berkemann, John Schomaker in infancy, Vincent "Bud" Schomaker, and Alphonse Schomaker; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Schomaker, Martin Kamer, Warren Krausz, Arthur Buehler, Bernard Berkemann, Elizabeth Schomaker, Pauline Schomaker, Herman & Irene Frerker, Wilhelmine & Herman Pollmann, Annie & William Thoele, Mary & Elmer Husmann, Laura & George Dulle and LaVerne "Bud" & Delores Frerker; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry & Josephine Frerker. Mr. Schomaker formerly worked at New Baden Grain and Trenton CO-OP. He was a member of St. George Parish in New Baden, past president of the Holy Name Society, was an usher and also served for funeral masses at the church. He was a past officer and current member of St. George New Baden Knights of Columbus Council 10311, a member of the New Baden Senior Citizens and was a New Baden volunteer fireman for 30 years. He was currently an honorary member of the New Baden Fire Department. Funeral mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at St. George Catholic Church in New Baden with Rev. Gene Neff officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in New Baden. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, June 21, 2010 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Hempen Funeral Home in New Baden. The New Baden Senior Citizens will visit at 5 p.m., the Knights of Columbus will visit at 6:45 p.m. and the New Baden Volunteer Fire Department at 7 p.m. all Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. George Parish and will be received at the funeral home.
