Sherman E. Walgren
October 21, 1918 — February 20, 2016
Sherman E. Walgren of Oro Valley, Arizona, formerly of Boulder, Illinois passed away at his home on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the age of 97 years. He was born on October 21, 1918 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of John and Josephine (Loberg) Walgren. Sherman married Armella Marcella Koester on July 3, 1945 in Oakland, California and she preceded him in death on January 2, 2013.
Mr. Walgren is survived by his daughter, Carleen Sue Miner of Marana, AZ, his brothers-in-law: Clifford Burnett, and Clarence “Doc” Burnett and his wife Bonnie of Carlyle; his granddaughter, Laurel Ann Vocke and two great grandchildren: Justin Lane Nichols and Tristin Allen Nichols.
Sherman was a veteran of the United States Navy and served his country aboard ships in World War II and aboard Aircraft in the Korean War. He worked in California as a carpenter most of his life and served as the Assistant Superintendent of High-rise Buildings in Los Angeles. Mr. Walgren was a Master Mason of the Freemasonry Masonic Lodge, and a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite. He was also belonged to the Al Malaikah Shriners in Los Angeles, Ainad Shriners in East St. Louis, and the Sabbar Shriners in Tucson. Sherman was a dedicated veteran and was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion. A few of Sherman’s many talents included playing the harmonica, organ, piano, accordion, and bag pipes. He had a lifelong love of motorcycles, dirt track car racing, and NASCAR.
Funeral services be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at Nordike Funeral Home in Carlyle. Burial will follow at Carlyle Township Cemetery with full military honors accorded.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8:00 PM on Monday, February 29, 2016 at Nordike Funeral Home in Carlyle and on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services also at the funeral home.
Memorials in honor of Sherman are suggested to Sabbar Shriners Hospitals and will be received at Nordike Funeral Home in Carlyle.
