Shirley J. Pommer, age 82, of Beckemeyer passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2017, at the Carlyle Healthcare Center. She was born the 10th child of John G. and Martha I. (Backs) Grayling in Posey, IL on June 22, 1935. Shirley married her husband of 62 years, Frank Pommer, on April 16, 1955 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle. He preceded her in death on May 29, 2017.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Freida, Lucille, Elbert, Oscar, Lorrain “Tuff”, Harold, Truman, Delbert, and Clifford “Butch” Grayling.
Shirley is survived by a son, Mark (Connie) Pommer of Beckemeyer; a daughter, Jeannie (John) Johnson of Gwinn, Michigan; six grandchildren: Timothy, Nicole, and Shaye Pommer, Rene Brindley, Mike (Brandy) Johnson, and Phillip Johnson; six great-grandchildren: Derby Pommer, Bella and Sean Tayloe, Mikayla, Brook, and Elizabeth Johnson. Also surviving are her two sisters-in-law: Janice Grayling and Shirley Grayling.
Shirley worked at Wee-Walker Shoe Factory and later at Rockwell. Through her life she enjoyed making and creating all kinds of crafts. She traced the majority of her family’s history through her hobby of genealogy. In her younger years she had a love of horses, especially her favorite horse, Tony. Shirley loved her family and cherished anytime they could get away on vacations together. She was the last survivor of her nine brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00 pm on Monday, August 28, 2017, at Nordike Funeral Home in Carlyle.
Visitation will be on Monday, August 28, 2017, from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Nordike Funeral Home in Carlyle.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the charity of donor’s choice and will be received at the funeral home.
