Shirley A. Wessel, 79, of Aviston, died Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at her residence. She was born April 19, 1937 in Mascoutah, the daughter of Clarence and Edna, nee Walthes, Price, Sr. She married Arnold T. Wessel on June 4, 1957 in New Baden and he preceded her in death on November 22, 2009.
She is survived by her children, Dale (Shawna Hunt) Wessel of Carlyle, Deb (Ron) Tebbe of St. Rose, Rick Wessel of Carlyle, Sheri (David) Nolte of Shattuc, and David (Jackie) Wessel of LaMonte, MO: 12 grandchildren, Tonya (Joe) Meyer, Nichole (Jeremy) Mueller, Nick (Nikki) Nolte, Matt (Angie) Nolte, Elizabeth (Joe) Terry, Sami (Seth) Borcherding, Lucas Wessel, Shelby (Daniel) Holbrook, Lindsey Wessel, Dale Wessel, Dylan Wessel, and Dustin Wessel; 13 great-grandchildren, Madisyn & Camryn Nolte, Riley & Kenzie Terry, Mia & Gavin Mueller, Liam & Logan Meyer, Claire Borcherding, Aiden & Adilee Nolte, and Jocelynn & Coralea Holbrook; her sister, Norma (Don) Krohn of Trenton; three brothers, Clarence (Ruth) Price of Vandalia, Norman Herzing of New Baden, and Paul (Judy) Herzing of New Baden; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Irene & Chris Doll of Chicago, Ed Rickelman of St. Louis, MO, and
Norma Wessel of Highland.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Danielle Wessel; her sister, Pearl Allen; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Vince & Kate Wessel, Lawrence “Larry” & Marie Wessel, Amelia & Benedict Kampwerth, Margaret Rickelman, Helen & Norbert Frey, and
Leonard Wessel.
Mrs. Wessel was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Francis Parish and Altar Sodality, and the American Legion Post 1239 Ladies Auxiliary where she was also a past president. Shirley enjoyed quilting, reading books, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Rev. Dan Friedman officiating. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 12, 2016 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Nordike Funeral Home in Aviston and again on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. at St. Francis Church in Aviston. The American Legion Post 1239 Auxiliary will visit the funeral home at 7 p.m. on Monday.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Shriners Hospital for Children and will be received at the church or Nordike Funeral Home, 301 S. Clinton, Aviston, IL 62216 who is in charge of arrangements.
