Major Norman Emil Strotheide, USAF, Ret. 77, died Tuesday July 27, 2010 at his home in Tullahoma, Tennessee, after a lengthy illness. He was born March 18, 1933 in New Baden, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Glenna Sue (Morris) Strotheide; an infant son, Bradley Strotheide; his parents, Norman and Viola Strotheide; a brother and sister, Robert Strotheide and Linda Lokmer. His aunt and uncle, Helen (Strotheide) and Raymond Reinhardt were life-long residents of New Baden. Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Leming whom he married April 26, 2003; one son, Eric and Tammy Strotheide of Lynchburg, Tennessee; daughter, Vicki and Earl Vaughn of Odin, IL, and three daughters living in Chattanooga, TN, Caryn and John Stinson, Barbi Rappaport, and Jenny and Terry Coffee. He leaves ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Strotheide was a graduate of Granite City High School and SIU Carbondale and he received his MBA from Central Michigan University in 1975. Major Strotheide served 20 years in the USAF; 12 years as a navigator on B52 bombers and eight years as an Intelligence Officer. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and then served four years as a liaison officer to the British Government where he wrote daily briefs for the Prime Minister and the Queen of England. After retiring he worked for several years as Head of Safety and Security for Chattanooga Airport. He was extremely proud of a US Secret Service commendation he received for coordinating a Presidential visit. There will be a private service for his children where his ashes, along with those of their mother will be interred at Greenmount Cemetery, New Baden. Memorials may be made to the New Baden Fire Department and will be received at Hempen Funeral Home, 15 E. Hanover, New Baden, IL 62265, who is in charge of arrangements.
