Daniel Markus Tonnies, 87, of New Baden, died Friday, May 3, 2013 at Countryside Manor in Aviston. He was born April 26, 1926 in Damiansville, son of Fred G. and Euphemia (Markus) Tonnies. He married Myrtle Heckenkemper in Albers on May 28, 1952 and she survives in New Baden. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Mike) Santel of New Baden; a grandson, Jeffrey M. Santel of New Baden; three sisters, Florence Arentsen of Damiansville, Vera Mullen of Stelton, CT, and Elizabeth “Betty” Dwyer of Bernalillo, NM; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Helen Tonnies of Breese, Delores Tonnies of Highland, Julie Stockmann of Aviston and Virgil and Regene Heckenkemper of New Baden. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Veronica (Stockmann) Tonnies; five brothers, Jerry Stockmann, Paul Tonnies, Fred Tonnies, Ralph Tonnies, and Virgil Tonnies; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lorraine Tonnies, Vincent Arentsen, Gloria Tonnies, John Mullen, Gary Dwyer and Florence Tonnies. Mr. Tonnies was retired from Wiegmann Electric in Freeburg and IMBS Mill in Belleville. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during WWII in the Pacific and Philippines. He was a member of St. Bernard Parish and Men’s Club and was also an usher and on the church finance committee. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1026 in Albers; former CYO Girls Softball coach; and he worked at Mater Dei Bingos for 35 years. He enjoyed supporting the American Legion events by tending bar and working at the Bingos. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Albers with Rev. Jack Joyce and Deacon Glenn Netemeyer officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery in Albers. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2013 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Hempen Funeral Home in Albers. Memorials may be made to Mater Dei High School or Albers American Legion Post 1026 and will be received at the funeral home.
