Mae Katherine Van Winkle, 89, of Mascoutah, died Thursday, October 7, 2010 at Village of Silver Creek in Mascoutah. She was born February 2, 1921 in Mascoutah, daughter of Oscar and Louise (Yarber) Kiel. She married Forrest J. “Rip” Van Winkle on February 21, 1943 in St. Louis, MO and he preceded her in death on April 11, 1976. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Joann Van Winkle of Carlyle; grandchildren and great grandchildren; a niece, Evelyn Warner of Waterloo; great nieces and great nephews, Brett (Patricia) Warner, Keith (Connie) Warner, and Sandy (Mark) Bandy; great-great nieces and great-great nephews, Ryan (Kelly) Warner, Brittnee (Jason) Greenwell, Brooke Warner, Alex Bandy, Nick Bandy, and Kira Warner. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sons, Dwight Van Winkle and Gordon J. Van Winkle; and two sisters, Hilda Renth and Adelia Reinhardt. Mrs. Van Winkle was a seamstress for Landenberg Hat Factory in Mascoutah before her retirement. She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Mascoutah, the Mascoutah Senior Citizens and the New Baden American Legion Post 321 Auxiliary. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at Hempen Funeral Home in New Baden with Rev. Joey Feldmann officiating. Burial will follow at Mascoutah City Cemetery in Mascoutah. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, October 11, 2010 and from 8 a.m. until time of service Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at Hempen Funeral Home in New Baden. The New Baden American Legion Ladies Auxiliary will visit at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society or to Unity Hospice and will be received at the funeral home.
