Edwin H. Venhaus, 97, of Aviston, died Friday, September 28, 2012 at Countryside Manor in Aviston. He was born August 27, 1915 in Aviston, son of Bernard and Katherine (Dall) Venhaus. He is survived by two brothers, Elmer Venhaus of Trenton and Bernard (Rosemary) Venhaus of Aviston; two sisters, Elvera (Lawrence) Tonnies of Trenton and Esther Kues of St. Charles, MO; a sister-in-law, Blanche Venhaus of Trenton; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ludwig Venhaus and Lawrence Venhaus; four sisters, Marcella Venhaus, Frieda Kohlbrecher, Florence Holtgrave, and Alma “Sis” Rohling; brothers-in-law, Joseph Kohlbrecher, Cletus Holtgrave, Edmund Rohling, and Orville Kues; and a sister-in-law, Marie Venhaus. Mr. Venhaus was retired from Monsanto Chemical. He was a veteran of the United States Marines; a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Aviston, the American Legion Post 1239, Clinton County Farm Bureau; and a past member of Sugar Creek Township Committee and the Aviston Volunteer Fire Department. A funeral mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. on Monday, October 1, 2012 at St. St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Rev. Dan Friedman officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2012 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 1, 2012 at Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston. There will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. and the American Legion will visit at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or St. Francis Parish and will be received at the funeral home.
