Verena Agnes Nothaus, 105, of Carlyle, died Thursday, April 30, 2020 at Carlyle Healthcare Center. She was born May 11, 1914 on the family farm near Huey, the daughter of Aloysius and Emma, nee Nettles, Nothaus.
Surviving are nephews, H. Neil (Kathy) Nothaus of Carlyle, Robert (Carole) Dalhaus of Champaign, Bill (Agnes Koehler) Taphorn of Carlyle, Ken (Cindy) Davis of Lakeview, FL, and Dean (Pam) Davis of Chicago; nieces, Virginia Davis of Charlotte, NC, Paulette (Tom) Horsman of Savage, MN, Pamela (Tom) James of Trenton, Patricia (Brad) Baer of Collinsville, Phyllis (Tom) Barnard of Edinberg, and Debbie (Navid) Navidi of Gunnison, CO; a sister-in-law, June Nothaus of Trenton; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Miss Nothaus was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Herbert A. Nothaus; and sisters, Gertrude Dalhaus, Isabel Taphorn Brinkman, and Mary Davis.
Miss Nothaus graduated from Southern Illinois State Normal University in 1934 and in 1955 attained a Bachelor of Science Education degree from SIUC. She began her elementary teaching career in the Pleasant Ridge and Carter schools followed by Boulder School and Carlyle Elementary from which she retired after teaching forty-five years. She possessed a keen interest in continuing to follow the welfare and achievements of her former students. On February 13, 2013, she was presented a Meritorious Service Award by the Clinton County Retired Teachers Association.
Miss Nothaus was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle where she previously taught religious education. In her advanced years, she did not miss religious services at the Healthcare Center and continued her daily devotions praying the Rosary each afternoon. She always attributed her longevity to having lived on the farm where there was always much to do.
A private family graveside service will be held at St. Mary Cemetery in Carlyle. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Expressions of sympathy in memory of Miss Nothaus are suggested to St. Mary’s Church or the American Heart Association and will be received at Nordike Funeral Home, 740 Fairfax St., Carlyle, IL 62231 who is serving the family.
