Victor W. Schaeffer

Victor W. Schaeffer, 94, of Carlyle, died on Friday, May 3, 2013 at the Carlyle Healthcare Center in Carlyle, IL.

He was born on the family farm north of Bartelso on November 26, 1918 to Louis and Cecilia (Beckmann) Schaeffer. He and Mary Alice Hetzel were married in 1965 and they lived in Breese until her death in 1998.

After his mother died in December 1927, he was raised by Joe and Mary Meyer on their farm southwest of Bartelso. After graduating from grade school in Bartelso, he worked as a farmhand in the area. Vic served as a mortar gunner in the 37th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army in the Pacific in WWII and was awarded a purple heart and three bronze stars for his service. After the war, he worked as a laborer in the Clinton County area for many years. Vic was a member of the Catholic War Veterans, Holthaus-Kampwerth American Legion Post 1227 in Beckemeyer, Goldsmith-Terry VFW Post 3523 in Carlyle and Laborers and Hodcarriers Local 581. He was also an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.

He is survived by a sister, Stella Koenig, of Caseyville, IL, by sisters-in-law, Alvina Schaeffer, Dorothy Schaeffer and Janet Schniers, and by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, and by his parents and brothers John Schaeffer, Ray Schaeffer and Cyril Schniers, sister, Mary Gehrs, and brothers-in-law, Ferdy Gehrs and Kenny Koenig.

Frerker Funeral Home in Carlyle handled the funeral arrangements and service information will be announced at a later date.
