Hedwig "Hattie" Welling, 89, of Aviston, died Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at Countryside Manor in Aviston. She was born October 15, 1919 in St. Rose daughter of Joseph and Anna (Hoff) Schrage. She married Leo G. Welling on May 21, 1941 in St. Louis, MO and he preceded her in death on February 3, 1999. She is survived by her children, Shirley Roshel of St. Charles, MO, Mary Lee (Dennis) Schmidt of Wichita, KS, Richard (Pat) Welling of Trenton, Marcellus Welling of Baltimore, MD, Karen (Gene) Canavan of Breese, and Patricia (Paul) Jaeger of The Woodlands, TX; one sister, Dorothy Maloney of St. Charles, MO; 14 grandchildren, Lance Roshel, Lisa (Jeffrey) McKamely, Douglas (Robyn) Schmidt, Daniel (Lisa) Schmidt, Darryl (Julie) Schmidt, Michelle (Dave) Huffman, Aleta (Michael) Hardy, Ian Welling, Kent Welling, Carrie Welling, Teresa Welling, Adam Welling, Brandon Jaeger and Collin Jaeger; and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Leon Welling; five brothers, August Schrage, Joe Schrage, Otto Schrage, Robert Schrage and Leonard Schrage; four sisters, Bernadine Schumacher, Anna Wilke, Sister Jeanette (Clara) Schrage, and Regina Klostermann; four brothers-in-law, Joe Schumacher, Ben Wilke, Bernard "Barney" Klostermann and John Maloney; and three sisters-in-law, Salome Schrage, Lenore Schrage and Clara Schrage. Mrs. Welling was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Francis Parish and Ladies Sodality, and the American Legion Post 1239 Auxiliary in Aviston. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, December 29, 2008, at St. Francis Church in Aviston with Deacon Charlie Litteken officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, December 28, 2008 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Monday, December 29, 2008 at the Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston. There will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. and the American Legion Auxiliary will visit at 7 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to donor’s choice.
