Arnold T. Wessel, 74, of Aviston, died Sunday, November 22, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville. He was born October 16, 1935 in Breese, son of Henry and Elizabeth (Ratermann) Wessel. He married Shirley Price on June 4, 1957 in New Baden and she survives in Aviston. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Dale (special friend, Amanda) Wessel of Carlyle, Debra (Ron) Tebbe of St. Rose, Rick Wessel of Aviston, Sheri (David) Nolte of Shattuc, and David (Jackie) Wessel of La Monte, MO; 12 grandchildren, Tonya (Joe) Meyer, Nichole (Jeremy) Mueller, Nick (fiancee, Nikki) Nolte, Matt (Angie) Nolte, Elizabeth (Joe) Terry, Sami (special friend, Seth) Nolte, Lucas Wessel, Shelby Wessel, Lindsey Wessel, Dale Wessel, Dylan Wessel, and Dustin Wessel; four great grandchildren, Madisyn Nolte, Camryn Nolte, Riley Terry, and Mia Mueller; a sister, Irene (Chris) Doll of Edwardsville; brothers-in-law and sisters- in-law, Catherine Wessel of Pierron, Ed Rickelman of St. Louis, MO, Norma Wessel of Highland, Pearl Allen of Shoals, IN, Clarence and Ruth Price of Shattuc, Norman Herzing of New Baden, Norma and Don Krohn of Trenton, and Paul and Judy Herzing of New Baden; and is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Danielle Wessel; three brothers, Vince Wessel, Lawrence “Larry” Wessel, and Leonard Wessel; three sisters, Amelia Kampwerth, Margaret Rickelman, and Helen Frey; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marie Wessel, Benedict Kampwerth,and Norbert Frey. Mr. Wessel was a salesman and farm tire repairer for the Clinton County Oil Company in Breese. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He was a member of St. Francis Parish and Men’s Sodality, the American Legion Post 1239, the Aviston Knights of Columbus Council 11110, a retired member of the Aviston Fire Department, he served on the Clinton County Board for 10 years, and was currently a Sugar Creek Township Trustee. He loved his kids, his grandkids and great grandkids, and enjoyed life to the fullest. A Memorial Mass will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at St. Francis Church in Aviston with Rev. Dan Friedman officiating. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston. Following committal at the cemetery, a celebration of Arnie’s life will continue at the American Legion in Aviston. Memorials may be made to the Donor’s Choice and will be received at the church or Hempen Funeral Home who is in charge of arrangements.
