Norbert J. Wieter, 81 of Breese, died Friday, October 3, 2008 at Caring First in Breese. He was born January 27, 1927 in Breese, son of Harry and Laura (Schulte) Wieter. He married Junilla "Nellie" Nowacki on June 15, 1949 at St. Anthony’s Church in Beckemeyer and she survives in Breese. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mary (Jim) Burns of Breese and Nancy (Bob) Grogan of St. Louis, MO; two grandchildren, Kevin (Julie) Grogan and Mark Grogan; two step grandchildren, Jessica Longshaw and Jim (Kristie) Burns; seven step great grandchildren, Alex Huelsmann, Brayden Huelsmann, Grant Huelsmann, Olivia Longshaw, Emma Burns, Addison Burns and Owen Burns; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Carl & Alma Nowacki of Florissant, MO, Ray & Rose Marie Nowacki of Murphysboro and Gilbert & Chris Nowacki of Austin, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Callie Nowacki. Mr. Wieter was retired from Scott Air Force Base Civil Service Base Supply. Following his retirement he worked part time at Poettker Construction in Breese. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during WWII. He was a member of St. Dominic Parish and Men’s Sodality; past commander of the American Legion Post 252, Breese; Past commander of Clinton County American Legion; past commander of American Legion 23rd District; member of VFW Post 805, O’Fallon, the Breese Knights of Columbus Council 2869, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and he was a Breese Township Trustee for 20 years. Norb played with the Jamestown Cornet Band for many years. He was a Breese Little League umpire and he played in the Breese Clinton County Baseball league and the Breese Softball league. He was a charter member of the Breese Historical Society, he served on the Breese Library board, he was involved in youth activities, including the Children & Youth Committee of the Breese American Legion, and he was a former editor of the TAB Post 252 newsletter. Norb was a diehard Cubs fan. A funeral mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, October 6 2008 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese with Rev. Patrick Peter officiating. Interment will follow at St. Dominic/St. Augustine Cemetery in Breese. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, October 5, 2008 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Monday, October 6, 2008 at Hempen Funeral Home in Breese. The Knights of Columbus will visit the funeral home at 7 p.m. and the American legion will visit at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Mater Dei High School or St. Dominic Parish and will be received at the funeral home.
