Vernon A. Wieter, 84, of Aviston, died Saturday, November 20, 2010 at his home. He was born June 13, 1926 in Breese, son of Anthony J. and Helen J. (Schulte) Wieter. He is survived by two brothers, Cornell (Katherine) Wieter of Peoria, AZ and James A. Wieter of Aviston; a sister-in-law, Lupe Wieter of Belleville and a brother-in-law, Allen Harem of Aviston. He is also survived by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph Wieter and Jerome "ToJo" Wieter; and a sister, Vernell H. Harem. Mr. Wieter was a veteran of the United States Army and served as a Paratrooper during WWII. He worked for B & O Railroad as a section hand and later as a laborer for Carlyle Local 581. He also worked for Kuhl Lumber and Pallet. He was a life member of American Legion Post 1239 in Aviston; a life member of VFW Post 805 in O’Fallon; and a member of Laborers Local 581 in Carlyle. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Rev. Dan Friedman officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston. Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, November 22, 2010 and from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston. There will be a prayer service at 6 p.m. and the American Legion will visit at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 1239 Remodel Fund and will be received at the funeral home.
