William “Bill” D. Thurman, age 71, of Carlyle, passed away on December 10, 2024, at his home. He was born on May 22, 1953, to William R. Thurman and Bertha Mae Smith. In a heartfelt union, he married Barbara Ann Dempsey on February 12, 1979, in Central City, and she preceded him in death on September 11, 2020.
Bill is lovingly remembered by his daughter-in-law, Denise Thurman of Centralia; his two granddaughters, Raeann and Carissa Thurman of Centralia; and his brothers, Dennis (Rhonda) Thurman of Taylorville, IL, and Bruce (Patricia) Thurman of West Frankfort, IL. He is also survived by half-sisters Angela Hill of Rogers, Arkansas and Joyce Smith of Crossett, Arkansas, as well as Lisa Knapp of Beckemeyer. Additionally, he leaves behind two sisters-in-law, Brenda (Steve) Tinsley and Phyllis (Doug) Branch, both of Centralia, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Bill was preceded in death by his beloved son, Stephen Ray Thurman; his parents, William R. Thurman and Bertha Mae Smith; and his stepmother, Barbara E. Thurman.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Bill retired from the Illinois Department of Corrections in Centralia. He was a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and enjoyed cheering for NFL teams. Bill valued his daily Bible studies. Above all, he cherished the moments spent with his granddaughters.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 13, 2024, at Nordike Funeral Home in Carlyle, with Rev. Jason McIntosh officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Centralia.
Visitation will take place at Nordike Funeral Home in Carlyle on Friday from 9:00 AM until the time of services.
In honor of Bill’s memory, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which can be made at Nordike Funeral Home, located at 740 Fairfax Street, Carlyle, IL 62231.
