William E. Malina

August 26, 1936 — October 6, 2024

New Baden, IL

William Emil Malina, 88, of New Baden, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at Aviston Countryside Manor. He was born August 26, 1936 in Breese, the son of Emil and Delora, nee Heithaus, Malina.

Bill is survived by his sister, Karen Billhartz; two nephews, Scott (Margaret "Meg") Billhartz and Jim (Cheryl) Malina; two great-nieces, Alexandra and Emily Billhartz; and his extended family.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Sharron Malina in infancy; and brother and sister-in-law, James and Peggy Malina.

Bill graduated from McKendree College (now McKendree University) in 1958 with his bachelor's degree and he received his master's degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. As a lifelong educator Bill began his teaching career at Central School in O'Fallon, where he inspired students as a science teacher before moving to Lebanon Grade School. At Lebanon, he taught 7th and 8th grade science and coached baseball and basketball for five years before becoming the principal. He served in this role with distinction until his retirement in 1993, culminating a remarkable 35 years in education.

Beyond his teaching career, Bill took great pride in his summer work with the National Park Service, spending five summers as a Park Ranger. His time at the Grand Tetons and Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado were particularly cherished experiences. To promote his passion for health and community engagement, he founded the Lebanon Cedar Cruisers, a walking club where he served as Chief Walking Officer for nearly 30 years. Bill organized hundreds of walking events in the St. Louis and southern Illinois area, including a memorable expedition to Denali National Park in Alaska in honor of his brother. He was especially proud to have walked in all 50 states and every county in Illinois.

He was a devoted member of Zion United Church of Christ in New Baden, serving on the church council, and previously was the treasurer at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Lebanon for several years. In addition to his church involvement, Bill contributed his time to local governance as a member of the New Baden City Council and the New Baden Library Board.

Bill relished the company of friends at the New Baden McDonald's, where he participated in the coffee club, enjoying countless conversations and camaraderie over the years. His legacy of service and community spirit will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
